How To Revamp Your Home Whilst In Lockdown

It’s April 2020. We now spend 24 hours a day at home which is, on average, about 10 hours more than we are used to. Everyday I seem to rotate between the same rooms of my house, go to bed and then do the same thing again the next day.

This has got me thinking: there must be a way to revamp the rooms of your house to make them feel new and interesting without breaking the bank, or needing to leave your home during lockdown. Here are my 4 tips for doing just that:

1. Decorate

This is the obvious one. You can create a feature wall or paint the whole room and, if you’re feeling really brave, you could hang some wallpaper! Also, by just touching up the odd marks that you have on your walls and filling in holes where pictures used to hang, you will make a room feel much more fresh and new. The DIY stores are all still open but you can also order your paint and wallpaper online without having to leave your house.

As well as decorating the walls, you could upcycle some pieces of furniture. You can do all sorts of things with upcycling, whether it be giving old furniture a new lick of paint or changing its fixtures, such as the handles and hinges.

Decoupage is another interesting way to upcycle furniture. For example, you could brighten up an old chest of drawers by wallpapering the fronts of the drawers with a colourful, bold patterned wallpaper.

Why not really make a statement by painting your kitchen units. This will give your kitchen a whole new lease of life.

2. Declutter

Now that we are spending 24 hours a day at home you must be realising there is a lot of stuff you have that you just don’t need. Don’t think that you need to bin everything though, maybe just reorganise it. Items accumulate on shelves and in corners of a room and make things feel messy. By rearranging your shelving or bookcases a room can feel tidier and therefore it will feel like a calmer space in your house. An amazing trick is to decorate shelving with various items, such as picture frames, ornaments, vases and include some storage boxes in a colour that matches the room. You can keep your necessities in the boxes, whilst making sure the room is tidy.

Another cool thing I have seen on Pinterest are books arranged in colour order. This may seem a little bonkers but it looks great and, to be honest, if we all have cabin fever and are looking for something to do then, why not?

3. Put Up Some Artwork

Changing the art and pictures you have around the house will enable you perceive a room differently. You can hang artwork in a variety of ways to make it more interesting, such as in a gallery wall style. This works especially well if you have different sizes and styles of frames. You could also add a mirror to your gallery wall arrangement which would create depth to a room and bring in some light to make it feel brighter.

If you don’t have any artwork at home you could use some family photographs or design the artwork yourself otherwise, there are many independent artists on Etsy who sell their work for a really reasonable price. Some of them even sell the file of their artwork so you can print it at home and therefore you don’t have to leave the house during lockdown!

4. Change Soft Furnishings

This is a great way to alter the colour of a room without doing anything permanent to it, which is perfect if you are renting your home. You could add some texture and pattern to a room by changing the curtains or blinds.

Better still, by reupholstering furniture you can create a new centrepiece to a room. If you were to reupholster a headboard for a bed and add some matching cushions you could change the entire style of the room with your choice of fabric. Fabric companies are still open online, so you can order whatever you need straight to your door.

We may all still be in lockdown and each day may continue to feel monotonous but, hopefully, these 4 changes will make your home feel fresh and new.
